Transgender Day of Remembrance
Thu Nov 20 2025 6:00PM – 9:00PM
Event Description:
Join the Office of Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity and the A.R.E. R.I.S.E. Center as we recognize Transgender Day of Remembrance. Transgender Day of Remembrance is observed annually on November 20 to memorialize those who have been murdered as a result of transphobia. Beginning in 1999, transgender advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith held a vigil to honor the memory of Rita Hester, a transgender woman who was killed in 1998. The vigil commemorated all the transgender people lost to violence since Rita Hester’s death, and began an important tradition that has become the annual Transgender Day of Remembrance. On Wednesday, Nov. 20, meet us in Hester Auditorium to honor all of the transgender people whose lives have been lost to anti-transgender violence, and learn about the violence affecting the transgender community. A table will be set up in the Brandt Student Center lobby from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. that day. For more information, contact Mannie Brown at ebrown1@su.edu
